Nakayama Pass (Route 230)
Elevation 835m | Jozankei, Sapporo to Kimobetsu, Abuta District
Studded/studless tires required. Watch for black ice and frozen roads. Tire chains recommended during heavy snowfall. Avoid sudden braking and steering.
Weekends and Obon holidays are congested with tourists heading to Lake Toya and Niseko. Allow extra travel time.
Steep slopes and sharp curves throughout. Reduce speed in rainy conditions as roads become slippery.
Kenashi Pass (Route 393)
Akaigawa, Yoichi District to Otaru | Steep grades and hairpin turns on the Otaru side
Studded/studless tires required. Slushy road conditions may make driving difficult. Road closures possible during heavy snow.
Popular with touring motorcyclists. Fog is common near the summit — watch for reduced visibility.
